Meredith Clark, who has led the News Leaders Association’s diversity survey in recent years, has resigned from the project. “You don’t get to transparency about diversity by relying on people’s goodwill.”
The news industry was quick to hire for diversity-focused roles after George Floyd’s murder in 2020 — but sustaining that change has proven slow and challenging.
The study suggests audience diversity results in favorable coverage for non-white political candidates. But newsroom diversity may be a boon for white candidates.
“We all grew up with All the President’s Men. You don’t want to take away from the power of that moment and the press holding the administration accountable. But we have to think, why was there not a Black person or a woman on that team?”
